The Epic Ontario Wine Region that’s NOT Niagara
by Brittany Peretin
Be honest… beer? Hockey? A guy yelling about “folks” on TV?
Yeah, we’ve heard it all.
But here’s the thing—Ontario has been wildly typecast. Blame Letterkenny, blame politics, blame whatever you want. Meanwhile, one of the best-kept secrets in Canada is just sitting here… quietly producing really, really good wine. Like, “wait… this is Ontario??” good. And no, I’m not talking about Niagara.
Somehow, when people think of Ontario wine, it’s Niagara or nothing. Sure, Niagara is lovely to visit. You can also drop thousands on Napa, or fly across the nation to BC wine country.
Meanwhile, just a bit south of Toronto, is an entire pocket of producers doing something special—and still somehow flying under the radar.
Enter EPIC Wine Country. Essex Pelee Island Coast.
This region—home to a collection of standout wineries along the Essex County coast—is where lakefront vineyards, long growing seasons, and a slightly rebellious energy come together. It’s less polished than Niagara, more laid-back, and– honestly?–that’s part of the charm.
I grew up near this scene, so trust me when I say: you don’t need a passport, a long-haul flight, or a second mortgage to sip world-class wine with a view. You just need a plan.
Lucky for you, I’ve got one. Sunsets, lakeside vines, and wines that will genuinely surprise you—in the best way.
Let’s get into it. 🍷
🍷 Pelee Island Winery
The icon. The main character. The reason this region even has credit.
- Canada’s southernmost vineyard = longer growing season, riper grapes, better flavour
- Massive vineyard footprint (700+ acres) = legit scale and consistency
- Known for approachable, easy-drinking wines that people actually like (not just wine snobs)
- Sustainable winemaking practices (yes, she’s eco-conscious too)
👉 Why go: It’s the perfect “first stop” — polished, scenic, and a great intro to the region.
🍇 Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards
For the “I want something elevated but still chill” crowd.
- Named after a rare bird native to the region (cute and meaningful)
- Known for award-winning wines + on-site restaurant (huge win)
- More refined, slightly boujee energy without being intimidating
👉 Why go: You come for wine… you stay for a full-on food + wine experience.
🍾 Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery
For the beach + wine combo (yes, that’s real here)
- Private lakefront beach (rare for wineries)
- Relaxed, summery, almost vacation-like vibe
- Great for groups / day drinking (respectfully)
👉 Why go: It feels like a mini getaway without leaving Ontario.
🧠 Why this region is actually amazing you might ask?
- It sits at a similar latitude to Tuscany + Provence (yes, seriously)
- Lake Erie creates a warmer microclimate → better ripening, more flavour
- It’s Canada’s warmest wine-growing region with longer sunny days
Translation: the wine is way better than you will expect.
The takeaway (aka your game plan)
- Start at Pelee Island Winery (set the tone)
- Do lunch at Cooper’s Hawk
- End at Sprucewood Shores for sunset
These are my three favourites, and are always enjoyable. But Essex County offers so much to explore. Check out the EPIC Wine Country website for more.
Happy wine tasting!
