Cheers to the Season with a Candy Cane Spritz

In the spirit of celebration and the holiday season, we’re sharing an easy recipe inspired by Freixenet, known for its premium sparkling wines such as their Cordon Negro #cava or Prosecco DOC, and celebration-first energy.

For this spritz we like the Freixenet Prosecco DOC, which has a subtly sweet fruitiness. It also helps that the bottle fits right in with our holiday aesthetic with silver foil and cut glass that catches the light like a Christmas tree ornament.

Construction of this spritz is delightfully simple. It’s a generous pour of prosecco, with crème de cacao added for a sweet, round mouthfeel, then topped with sparkling water. Finally, it’s all stirred with a candy cane, which quickly starts to dissolve in the bubbles, imparting that hit of holiday peppermint and a pleasing pink colour. The most involved step is crushing the candy canes to rim the glass, but this is also very satisfying.

Feel free to play with the proportions on this one. For a 6oz pour of prosecco, we like 1oz of crème de cacao, a little can go a long way, but if you want more of a chocolaty sweetness you can push it up to a couple ounces.

Make sure your ingredients are well-chilled, as this cocktail works nicer without having to pour over ice.

INGREDIENTS

• 6oz of Freixenet Prosecco DOC
• 1 – 1.5 oz of Crème De Cacao
• 1 – 2 oz of sparkling water
• A handful of peppermint candy canes, whole for the drink and crushed for the rim.

METHOD

• Crush candy canes. We use a mortar and pestle, but you can also use a rolling pin
• Rim a deep wine glass with the crushed candy canes
• Pour well-chilled prosecco into glass
• Add crème de cacao
• Top with sparkling water
• Add whole candy cane to the glass, stir to mix, and serve!
